Stirling
Stirling's a great place for a day trip, and is actually really accessible from both Glasgow and Edinburgh. It's got a large (sometimes questionably restored castle) as well as the wallace monument, which I really enjoyed.
The castle is a large, sprawling complex of buildings, although many of them are choked with other visitors, this is clearly a place where everyone comes for the their holidays. It's a great castle to roam about it, there's not too many signs forcing you to go a certain route, you can see as much or as little as you like.
It has it's charms, and has several gift shops and a little cafe to sit and rest your feet for a bit. The fudge looked really nice, but considering we had brought our own body weight in fudge from Scarborough and the fact the car was full of it meant we didn't get any more.
More interesting, and certainly more dramatic is the Wallace monument, just outside the city. Its a huge tower, build to celebrate the life and achievements of Sir William Wallace. Now it's maybe not for the faint of heart, as it contains a narrow staircase with 246 steps. But for weirdo's like me, thats all part of the fun! Each floor there is a little exhibition about Scottish history, as well as artefacts and information about them. And then at the top, there is the one of the best observation decks I've ever been on. You can see for tens of miles around, and with such clarity, I was bowled over! And I mean that literally, you need to hold on tight so you don't get blown off the top! Ive never been anywhere with such a strong wind before!
One of the most interesting places I have been to. Whatever youre doing in Scotland, just make sure you visit Stirling!
