Brno

Image
Next on my travels was Brno, the capital of Moravia. It was a quiet but friendly city, with a few sights. A good place I visited was the St Peter and Pavel cathedral, which when you climbed the towers, gave you an impressive view over the city. As if my visit to Sedlec ossuary wasn't macabre enough, I also went to the capuchin monastery, where the bodies of mummified monks and people who funded the monastery stay. It was a bizarre but interesting little place. Other than that, Brno was quiet, and had not much else to see.  The frogs were made of brass! Quite a funky little piece of artwork!  Next stop, Bratislava!

Kutna Hora and Sedlec

Image
I had to dedicate an entire post to a day trip to Kutna Hora. Now the town was pretty, it had a nice little old town part, I had a pizza for lunch (Tuna no less) and had a good wonder about and saw my first ever two headed deer as well. But that wasn't my reason for coming, my real reason for visiting Kutna Hora was to visit Sedlec Ossuary. A macabre but magical little chapel, decorated exclusively with over 40,000 peoples bones. It was simply breath taking.  It was amazing. I think what was more incredible, was that the chapel above was just plain and clear, it was such a contrast with the ossuary beneath it. Even more interesting was the preservation works. They were having to dig around the ossuary to create a deeper and better foundation for it, but they were coming across hundreds of burials, one on top another as they dug.  If you get a chance to visit, please go, honestly, you will not be disappointed

Prague!

Hello again! This post is dedicated to my new favourite city, Prague! Wow what a place! It was stunning, there was so much to see and do, it was just incredible! I cannot even begin to describe it. Everything you ever wanted from a city, is there, right at your fingertips! Im afraid, I can only give you the highlights though.  And even then I can't tell you all of them! If you visit once city in your life, Prague needs to be it. The Charles Bridge was  beautiful, you got a really good view of it from both the other bridges, and some of the small islands in the river. It was busy though, and there were loads of those pesky people claiming to be artists on the bridge. I then visited a strange but quite fascinating museum, all about medieval torture devices. Yes I know what you're thinking, but actually it was really interesting, not to mention a little bit kinky! I then went up the massive hill to see the view, and stumbled across a tower there, that looked just like ...

Vienna

Image
I had a rather uneventful journey from Krakow to Vienna. Just your average night train, where I met a young Australian and talked about cottaging. Very normal! I don't even know how it happened! One minute we were talking about nightclubs and parties, the next he was telling me about he went off a path while trekking and noticed there was naked men everywhere! Only on a night train you could say! Anyway, onto Vienna. The train got me there at about 7ish,  so by the time I caught the uban to Leopoldstadt, and dropped my bags off at the hotel, it was nearly 8. I then started to explore Vienna. Now anybody that knows me, knows I have a deep dark interest in the black death. Something about the concept that a plague swooping across aisa and Europe, wiping masses of the population out, as well as the social upheaval afterwards, makes for very interesting reading. I read in my guide book about a massive monument to the people that died of the plague throughout the years. I trekked acr...

Krakow part 2

Image
Sorry this has been a bit slow in coming, I've just had a couple of manic days! So after I left Jonn at the airport I went to go and find the hostel I was staying at. Blimming heck it was like trying to find Lord Lucan! I must have walked up and down the street a thousand times, before I just happened to glance through a gate, guarding an archway. That's when I saw an old looking sign saying "B movie hostel.". Hurrah! I checked in, ditched my bags and went off for the rest of the day. I explored the newer parts if Krakow,  and even made a new friend in the process! We ended up going for a kebab, and she was telling me about how she had a night train to Lviv (Ukraine)  booked. Ukraine sounds amazing, I think I might have to give it a try later on in my travels. But anyway,  the next day I went to Wawel Castle and Cathedral. The castle was okay, it had that really stuffy English heritage feel about it, but the cathedral was good. The best bit was climbing up into this ...

Krakow part 1

Image
From Warsaw,I came to Krakow. After some confusion at the ticket counter, I found out that all the seats on board were sold out. Except for first class.  But for some reason I only paid an extra 25 zloty which I was more than fine about. Oh Krakow , where do I even begin? After finally escaping from the huge shopping centre you exit the station from, I made my way towards barbican, where I was going to meet my boyfriend Jonn. It’s not been easy while we have been together. My insane work patterns and constant night shifts meant that we usually only saw each other once a fortnight, which was really hard. But we texted everyday so at least we could speak to each other. It was more difficult when Christmas arrived. He spent Christmas with his family in Bristol, and then from there to Thailand, so it was over a month before I saw him again. We then had almost a week together. It was glorious! From my last day at work went straight to him in Bournemouth, we had Friday and Saturday nigh...

Warsaw part 3

Image
Good evening! Wow! What a week in Warsaw! I can't believe it has already been and gone! I finished the week by visiting the Polish museum of war. It was pretty interesting except for being confusing! They give you a headset with all the information on it, and as you look at the exhibit, you type the number into the handset and it gives you the information. Or so it should. Half the numbers didn't actually match up to the item they were supposed to describe, and some were just utterly random. That said, I did enjoy it there, and saw some pretty impressive rocket launchers covered in snow! The other main highlight from my time in the last day was a trip to an amazing cafe called Yugo, it serves Balklan food. The service is terrible but the food more than makes up for it. I had this super spicy patty with bread and salad and it was so so good. And it was only about 25 zloty (that's about a fiver!)  Poland really is a good value destination, you just have to do a little se...

Warsaw Part 2

Hello again. In still in Warsaw, and I have been busy! I went to the Warsaw castle. My god that was brilliant, complelty rebuilt as well! It nmakes you wonder how you can justify blowing up things in war time. Well to me anyway, the displays at the Castle explained it very well. I also went to the chopin museum. Now that was interesting. I’m not a huge fan of classical music particularly one instrument shows, and I didn’t know an awful lot about chopin, but my traveling book recommended it as a top choice. I had a couple of hours to spare, and by God am I glad I went! It’s all very high tec,you get given a plastic card, which you activate on the way in, which you use to interact with various exhibits, and not just those that play music, some give you actual readings of his letters, others reading of his concert reviews, and much more. I actually really enjoyed it there. I also went to two of Warsaws impressive shopping centres, Arkade and zlote tarasy. (yes I treated myself to a new...
