He misses Sahira, more that the Sahara misses rain - part 4

A very hungover Greg clambered out of his car. The car reeked of vomit piss and alcohol, and there were scratches all over the windows and body. He managed to stagger up to the hospital, and got in the lift. One of the new Nurses in the ED was in there, and she wrinkled her nose in distaste at him.
"Yeah Thats right!" he yelled at her, as she got out two stops early, he could hear her muttering about his poor hygiene as she left.
He raced into the staff room, and after coating himself in an inch of deodorant, and took six aspirin in quick succession. Realizing that the last one would be lonely, he swallowed that one as well. Greg was good, he didn't even need water. He had a quick look at the staffing sheet, which showed him that everyone else had called in sick, and he was the only doctor and surgeon on the ward except for Devon. Greg groaned, partially from his throbbing head and the fact there was something sharp embedded in the sole of his foot, but also from having to spend all day with Devon, who he had managed to avoid quite well recently. Greg gently lowered himself down onto the sofa and took his shoe and blood stained white sock off, and began to try and pull out the intruder in his foot.
"Morning Mr Douglas" Devon said as he came in, his long black hair in two long plaits that said down the front of his scrubs. "How are you?"
Greg gave Devon the look of death, which he didn't seem to notice, as he was too busy yabbering away about something.
"You ok there Greg?" Devon asked, coming over with a cup of tea for Greg.
"Ta" Greg said, accepting the tea. "I'm fine, there something stuck in my foot"
"Do you want me to have a look?" Devon said, taking a closer look.
Greg really wanted Devon to go away, but he couldn't get it out, so he let Devon get on with it.
"Got a foot fetish?" Greg asked, as Devon came back from getting some local anesthetic and some medical supplies.
"No" Devon lied, as he set about removing the object.
"ARRRGHHH" Greg moaned, and Devon removed the fish hook.
"Wow" Devon said, gazing closely at it. "How on earth did you manage to walk around on that? We should really get it scanned, and give you a tetanus jab"
Greg nodded. "yes, i'll do it later" he said, applying some padding to his foot, before reaching for his sock.
"Ugh Greg Thats disgusting. Let me get you a clean pair" Devon said, standing up and walking over to his locker. "You're a size 9 aren't you?"
"ummmm, how do you know that?" Greg whistled, feeling very creeped out.
"You wear the same shoes as my old boyfriend did" Devon replied, Taking off his apron and throwing the socks to Greg, Before fiddling with the end of his plait.
"Ummm, thanks I guess" Greg said, pulling on the warm woolen socks. He hated to say it, but they felt really good against his skin. "Won't you're boyfriend need them then?"
The cheerful glow that was always in Devon's face and eyes disappeared "No...he won't" Devon stared ahead for a moment, clearly distressed over the thought of his boyfriend. "But i'm sure he won't mind" Devon continued, the colour and life bouncing back into his face. "I'll see you on the ward" and he left.
Greg sat there for a moment, massaging his foot back into his shoe while thinking about Devon. That split second change had made Devon look so alone and vulnerable. Greg got so into thinking about Devon, that he didn't realize he had tied his shoe laces together, so when he stood up, he tripped and fell, hitting his forehead on the corner of one of the chairs.
The crash must have been loud, because Devon and one of the ward nurses's, Meg, Ran in.
"Oh my god Greg are you ok??" Devon asked, gently taking his pulse. "We need some help in here!" he shouted through the open staff room door onto the ward.
"He's got a severe head trauma, he need to get him to the ED quickly" Meg said to Devon, her long red hair mixing with Devon's long black plait to form a whirling vortex of bright colours and geometric patterns. And that's when Greg passed out.
