An angry rant

First of all, I want to say that we live in a world full of pain and suffering. From conflict in Syria, Yemen and in central Africa, to poverty in disease in much of the developing world, to the waste of life in attacks in Afghanistan, Pakistan and also in Europe. Now is the time for humanity to be standing together and helping each other out.

I know this following topic is pale in comparison to the horrors of war and poverty, but I think it's an important issue that needs addressing.

A few days ago, it was announced there was a solution, agreed to by both parties involved, over the naming of Macedonia. I knew as soon as I heard it was not going to be right. And I was correct.

The entire row, which has lasted over 25 years since the collapse of Yugoslavia, has caused nothing but trouble, economic and social problems in Macedonia. A country that, along with Slovenia, was fairly untouched by the horrors of ethnic cleansing, compared to Croatia, Serbia,Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo, although there are still issues, even now.

The issue stems from what Greece says, is the name of a northern province. That alone should be cause for concern, if the same logic was used elsewhere, then surely the USA could start a diplomatic war with the nation of Georgia, due to Thier similar names.

Secondly, I find it apalling that the international community has not just allowed this issue to last for 25+ years, but has taken the side of the Greeks. A state, with clear irredentism and land grabbing ideology. This is not a debate about a name, it is Greece trying to influence and take over areas of the Balkans.

It is interesting, that a nation of Greece has gone so far in its attempts to smother this small ex Yugoslav nation. From blocking EU and NATO applications, to using trade blocks and economic sanctions to put pressure on the Macedonian state.

But Greece is contradicting itself. When you look at the division of Cyprus, it shouts the loudest, constantly protesting and demanding the Turks hand back the northern third of Cyprus. It is obvious, that the Greek and Cypriot states have a long common history, as well as significant economic, linguistic and cultural ties, almost to the point where Cyprus could almost be considered a province of Greece.

So why does Greece cause so many problems for Macedonia? It wants more territory? More arable land? More international recognition and prestige? A combination of any of those, and many more.

It is interesting, Greece has caused more trouble on an international stage for Macedonia, than Azerbaijan and Armenia have, and these are two countries still technically at war. This is entire issue with the naming of Macedonia is quite simply, ridiculous, and a load of old tosh.

Even the EU, so worried over an economic collapse of Greece, which could cause serious destabilising damage to the eurozone and to Europe in general, is being remarkably pro Greece. This is in light of the fact that Greece has bullied it's northern neighbours since independence.

Macedonia is Macedonia.
Not Republic of North Macedonia.
Does that make the province of Macedonia inside Greece, the Republic of South Macedonia? Do we need to declare it a new country?

Greece, from now on, using its own logic and aggressive naming tactics, should be called the former Ottoman state of Greece.

Or perhaps, seeing as Alexander the great was Macedonian, we should be cling it the Former Macedonian state of Greece.

Sounds utterly silly didn't it.

But that's Greece for you.
