Aspendos
The first place to visit from Antalya is Aspendos. It's two Dolmuş (minibus) rides away, about an hour and a bit from Antalya Otogar (bus station) and it is incredible. It contains the most complete Roman amphitheatre in the world, and the size of it just blows you away.
The theater is stunning, and you can just sit in the warm sun and bask in the history of the building.,the while watching the two turks dressed as gladiators mock sword fighting.
HOWEVER!
There is an Entire archaeological site on the hill above the theater, that everyone misses out on. There were quite a few people in the theater, but nobody at the the top of the hill seeing the remains of the city which quite frankly is shocking. Here's what you're missing out on:
The masonry remains contrast so beautifully with the lunch green vegetation and the honey coloured ground. The view of the whole area is just incredible.
The site is barely excavated, in some places there are metres of rubble and topsoil that need to be excavated and searched. That mosaic had clearly been found by a visitor, as it was not fenced off, let alone cleared properly.
It's things like that I love. The feeling of being the first one there, the explorer the discoverer, like Indiana Jokes, searching for lost civilizations and worlds.
Wouldn't that be an incredible feeling to find a lost city, to just be wondering through an area, and arriving at a ruined temple, bristling with history and magic, just waiting to be seen.
But I'm getting carried away. Places like Aspendos are like that for me, and hopefully I'll find even more soon!
