Suomenlinna

Suomenlinna is a very interesting fort island complex just a few minutes ferry ride from Helsinki. Started by the Swedes, continued by the Russians, and finished by the Finns, its a sprawling and wind swept island chain, used for the defence of Helsinki. Its been beautifully preserved and looked after, and is only a few euros to get to on the ferry. Take a look:

 This is Finland in one photo, cool, crisp clean air, waters so clear your sins reflect back at you, and harmonious nature. Its hard to leave, because you feel so pure and clean here.

When built, this was the largest dry dock of its age. These (I think) are one of the plugs to close off the dry dock when boats/ships have come in. It may not look big, but it was wider than our house is!

Suomenlinna also has several museums and exhibitions on it. Just be careful to do a little research before you visit the island. When entry prices are eight or ten euros a time, it can get very expensive, very quickly, especially if you are on a budget. Chose which ones you want to see and do those. Trust me, there's nothing worse than realising you've spent all your days money before visiting the thing you most wanted to!
