Klaipeda

Klaipeda is a big Lithuanian city on the coast, mainly used as a gateway to the Baltic and also to the Curonian spit (Which is coming as a separate post). Its a small and quaint little city, full of interesting little sculptures and art scattered across the city, as well as a historic waterfront area too. Persoanally, my favourite part of Klaipeda was the sculpture park, just near the main bus station. According to the ladies at Kubu hostel (a lovely hostel in the centre, with fully stocked kitchen and a log burning stove) it was made by the soviets, as a showcase of art and sculpture. There are some really interesting pieces of art there, and its well worth spending some time there. I even had a picnic there in the freezing cold!

Its very peaceful and quiet there, and it was good to be away from the hustle and bustle of the town. There's also several brass sculptures dotted around the town, most notably a perky little mouse and a rather ominous looking ghoul, climbing out of the water.

                                                                        Spooky!!!!

The castle was closed while I was there, but the dockyards were so interesting to walk around. Beautiful medieval buildings dotted about, with huge industrial cranes rising up behind them, meant that Klaipeda had a great mix of old and new.

Next up, I head to the capital, Vilnius.
